Musée de la Création Franche
The Guide du Routard sums the museum up this way: "The Musée de la Création Franche is the Mecca of outsider art... People who love this art form will be delighted, and those who don't will be shaken, but fascinated".
A few explanations... The term art brut was invented by Jean Dubuffet in 1945 and translated as "ousider art" into English by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972. It covers works created by non-professional artists outside of the usual aesthetic framework (patients in psychiatric hospitals, isolated self-taught artists, etc.). Dubuffet saw such art as spontaneous and without any cultural pretensions or the result of any intellectual effort. (source: Wikipedia)
The Musée de la Création Franche, founded in Bègles in 1996, has one of the largest collections of outsider art in the world (some 14,000 works). The museum also organises five annual exhibitions, including "Dissident Visions and Creations", presenting eight new artists every year.
The collection is housed in a very charming former private residence in the middle of a garden. A visit to the Musée de la Création Franche is an artistic discovery well and truly off the beaten track.
