The famous composer of Fellini's film scores also composed operas: not serious, dramatic operas, but light operas in which life takes center stage, with lilting, light, uplifting melodies. Written in 1945-1946 during the Liberation, Il Cappello di paglia di Firenze (The Straw Hat of Italy) is a farce inspired by Eugène Labiche. On the morning of Fadinard's wedding day, his horse eats the straw hat of a young woman (Anaïs) in tender conversation with her lover. The couple follow him home, refusing to leave until Fadinard replaces the hat with an identical one, since Anaïs has a jealous husband who would be surprised by the disappearance...
